Tissue Harvest: Gum Recession Treatment Procedures

There are different types of gum grafts.

The most common is the free gingival graft to repair areas of recession or areas where there is deficient attached gingival tissue. The free gingival graft takes tissue from a donor site, usually the palate.

Another type of graft is the lateral repositioned graft. The laterally repositioned graft is performed by splitting the tissue adjacent to the recipient site and rotating it into place while preserving the integrity of the blood supply.

In cases where a free gingival graft is the best choice treatment, two methods are currently popular for obtaining the needed tissue from the palate, or roof of the mouth.

Harvesting Choices: Degrees of Invasiveness

A time honored procedure, now considered to be antiquated by doctors practicing advanced perioidontics, involves shaving or peeling off thin layers of tissue from the palate. This method, however, can leave a large open wound that is left to heal naturally.

Surgical stents are sometimes provided to cover and protect the wound area while healing.

A newer harvesting method involves the creation of a trap door type of flap in the palate. The graft material is harvested from from the underlying tissue and then the area is closed.

There is no exposed wound that has to granulate in and heal. Discomfort, if any, usually resolves in about a day.

Recommended viewing for patients who prefer minimally or non-invasive dentistry treatments.
